Waking Up

G reetings! Here's today's offering, which will probably resonate more with my female readers. Sorry, guys. Maybe you'll want to share it with the women in your lives, and use it to increase your understanding of each other.

Waking Up

I woke up in some other woman’s life today.
I knew right away it wasn't mine.

I missed the adoring gaze of my smiling husband.
The flowers on my bedside table,
The candles burned low from illuminating late night passion.

Instead, weary eyes, glazed over with familiarity
Glanced cursorily in my direction
As he hauled himself out of bed and plodded to the shower.

I woke up in some other woman’s life today.
I could never live like this.

I missed the sun streaming in my window.
Quiet, warm solitude,
Gentle stretching, and a steaming mug of tea.

This house is cold and damp,
With dirty dishes in the sink
And sharp crumbs on the floor that hurt my feet.

I woke up in some other woman’s life today.
And I don’t like it here.

She cleans and cooks and cares
For everyone else,
And invests precious little time or energy
Into nurturing her own being.

Didn’t anyone ever tell her
Never to compromise on her dreams?
Perhaps. But for reasons that made sense to her at the time,
She decided it was easier to simply stop dreaming.

I woke up in some other woman’s life today.
I hope she woke up in mine.

And at this very moment,
She is deeply relaxed,
And experiencing how it feels
To both give and receive from the heart.

I hope she is savoring the solitude.
Feeding her spirit,
Attending to her body, And remembering her true beauty.

I woke up in some other woman’s life today.
And I want to go back home!

But I’ve decided to stay a while longer.
Make a few changes
Before I give this life back to her.
I want more for her than she wants for herself.

She deserves better than this.
Every woman does.
She has simply forgotten
That she’s worth so much more.

I woke up in some other woman’s life today.
I hope she wakes up, too.
Because both of these women are me.
(Could both of these women be you?)
