We all know that the right start can mean a world of difference in the direction your future takes and being armed with the best information can put you ahead of the competition. But, how many young people leave college without the slightest idea of how to make the transition from school to the real world, what to expect when they enter the workforce, or worse yet, how to go about being prepared for this brand new experience that can sometimes be daunting and scary?
I only wish that I had a daughter to give Chaz Kyser's book
Embracing the Real World: The Black Woman's Guide to Life After College as it's the perfect handbook for the young woman venturing out in the working world for the first time. It's valuable in its scope and detail of the things college graduates need to know. Kyser, a journalism instructor at Langston University, touches on office politics, the kind of behavior that gets you ahead, being fired, going back to school, fitting in at work, managing your boss and numerous things associated with having a meaningful career.
Kyser's voice is one of the encouraging mentor who will try to help you through the stuff that can bog you down and daunt your spirit. It's like she really wants to see you succeed and that's encouraging for any young person struggling with self-doubt and fear.
Twenty points to a Better Interview is a must-read for anybody looking to put on their best professional face and landing the job.
The book is filled with real world stories, some from the author herself, that will help to ease the nervousness that comes with finding yourself out there. For the just finished college student thinking - What next, this handbook should help get them through the vast amount of questions and make the experience a little less daunting...it should be on part of the cirriculum for college.
Although there are segments that speak directly to the young, black college graduate, this
well-thought out book is universal in its broad topic range, and there is valuable information for any body at any stage of their working life. It is must-know information if you are to enter the workforce with confidence, knowing what to expect and if you want to move forward in your career. I only wish that I had half this information when I first started out.
