Life is a Timed Event

O ne of the mysteries of life is that most people act as if they have all the time in the world, while at the same time knowing that time is running out. Like many events that occur during life, life itself is a timed event. There is a starting point and an ending point. In between those points, life happens. Unfortunately, that’s also where life gets wasted. It is assumed that there will be plenty of time to get everything done and that just isn’t so. And when the clock runs out and the buzzer goes off, that is the end.

I was having lunch with a friend when she shared with me a recent outdoor challenge event she attended. The group she was with was doing a ropes course and each event in the course was timed. They had exactly ten minutes to complete each event. If they were not finished within the time allotted, the leader called the time, and they had to stop what they were doing and move to the next event. The idea was that life is a timed event and you have to seize every moment and make the most of it. If not, you will be stopped in the middle and not allowed to finish what you started.

I have heard so many people say they were putting off doing something until… For many of these people, life ended before they reached some vague future point when they would do that which they had been putting off. If you’re waiting for any reason to get started, don’t put it off for another day. Even if you can take just one small step each day, that is better than not starting at all. No matter what you do, you will never be able to finish everything you start before you die, but by getting started you will have gone further than if you never began.

Don’t wait until retirement, or until you lose weight, or until the kids are grown, or whatever else to get started on your goals and dreams. Life is a timed event, and when the clock runs out that’s it. There is no overtime! There are so many small steps you can take to get started on whatever it is you want right now. So don’t delay for another second. Begin today and get as much done as possible before the clock runs out.
