cover Decide

O ne of the most important steps to making any goal a success is your decision. First of all, you have to decide what you want, and then you have to decide that you will succeed. Without making a clear decision on what you want and that you will achieve it, you set yourself up for failure. You simply won’t have the passion or the direction to achieve your goal. Decision is crucial to creating what you want in your life.

First, decide what you want and be crystal clear about it. To decide you want to lose weight isn’t good enough. It isn’t clear what you mean by that. If all you want to do is lose weight, once you lose an ounce you have achieved your goal. Instead, you want to be crystal clear about what it is you want. If it is to lose weight, how much weight do you want to lose? Be as specific and detailed as you can be. When you become clear on what you want and decide you will go for it, the universe will work with you to make it happen. The people and resources you need to achieve your goal will show up.

The next step is to decide that you will accomplish your goal. One of my former clients tells a story about when we were first coaching together. She came to the coaching call all set to take copious notes on how she would succeed in creating a successful business. She laughs and says she had a pad of paper in front of her and was poised with her pen. She asked me to tell her how to create a successful business, and then she sat back ready to write pages of notes. What I told her shocked her. I said, “Decide the business will be a success and it will.” This sounds crazy, but I hear so many people talk about their goals using words like, “I hope this works” or “It sure would be nice if this happens.” The universe can’t help you if you are wishy-washy. You have to decide what you want and decide that you will have it. One of my favorite quotes comes from Henry Ford. When Mr. Ford decided he would have his engineers design a V8 engine (something that had not been done nor did anyone believe it could be done), Mr. Ford told his team, “I want it and I shall have it.” Mr. Ford decided on what he wanted and decided he would have it. Decide and you are halfway there.

Notice that what I am talking about is deciding, not figuring out how you will accomplish your goals. Your initial strong decision will lead you to the how. Once you are crystal clear on what you want and that you will have it, the how will be revealed. The how isn’t your job, the decision of what you want and that you will have it is.
