Tell A Friend About Us:

   Morning Dancer

   By Neena Maiya

T his morning at six one solitary brown gyal been sitting on the seawall, watching traffic, watching cold metal, cars and trucks cutting quickly by, while behind she the pastel blue and baby powder sky spread out like a soft, soft screen.

And she gyal, she sitting still, watching, watching, just another brown gyal with a bit o' plump here and a bit o' plump there.

Then suddenly.

She raise she hands, she stretch she arms, she arch them, two round, brown, semi-circle curves, and she twist sheself around to look behind.

And she gyal, just another brown gyal sitting on the wall, turn into a dancer, one Balinese-Guyanese dancer gyal sitting on the old, grey concrete wall against the pastel morning sky.

And I start to think, is who did say you got to be thin and white to be beautiful? And I hope, and I hope that she never diet sheself thin, or bleach sheself pale with skin fading cream.
