"The way we live our days, is the way we live our lives.
- Annie Dillard
We don't need to tell you that you should "seize the day" because summer quickly comes to an end - or do we? After a long winter of hibernation, it's basically 75 days where you can put some zest into your life and rejuvenate your spirit by trying any number of new things. Other than the planned vacation away from home, most of these summer activities are on the fly and don't cost anything. Try some of ours and add some of your own to the list to have a fabulous summer.
• Get in an early morning walk or stroll before it gets too hot. You can stroll around the park with a friend or have a solitary walk by the lake or join a walking group. It's not only social it's great exercise.
• Use the fresh summer veggies from your garden, the market or that generous friend to cook up some new dishes for that barbecue or that family get-together. Take advantage of the season's veggies for those light, quick summer dishes.
• Start new projects around the house. Choose ones that are do-able for the summer and won't leave you frantic to finish when you should be out having fun.
• Take your camera wherever you go and never miss a photo-op. Capture your day. If yours is too cumbersome, then try those disposable ones. You can get them for as low as three for ten dollars
• Get a basket full of summer reads. Trashy romance, memoirs or those magazines you've been meaning to catch up on. Read them leisurely, shamelessly and pass them onto friends.
• Road Trip. Pick a day with the girls, the family or solo, if you must, and go for a ride into the country. Choose a town you've never been to and visit their book stories and small shops on Main street. If expense is not a problem, stay at one of those bed and breakfasts and have them serve you a true country breakfast.
• Try a new activity. Go fishing - it's relaxing. The kids will love it. There's mini golf. Mini fairs. Biking. If you live in the mountains, take a trip up to the summit.
• Have a Lemonade Stand. If you have kids, hand the rein over to them. Even if you don't have children, it would be a great way to say hello again after a long winter. Better yet, get together with the neighbors and have a block party om somebody's front lawn.
• Visit Your Local State Parks. A day of picnicking, swimming, hiking, exploring and being surrounded by nature does good for the summer soul.
• Start or join a club. Take the Book Club outside. Writer's Group? Meet outdoors or at sidewalk cafes or have a garden party complete with tea and crumpets.
• Meet new people. This is the time of year when people are enjoying hobbies, roller-blading, taking the kids to the park. Open up yourself to starting a conversation. Say hello to a neighbor over the hedge.
• Relax. Don't let the urge to do everything at once because it's summer. While it's great fun being a weekend warrior, there should be time to relax with a good book and rejuvenate your spirit.
• Soak up some culture. Catch Shakespeare or a play in the park. There are lots of local theatre or church groups looking for an audience. It's usually free or costs next to nothing.
• Learn about the place where you live. Visit your museum. Do a walking tour of the little places that've always intrigued you. Research the things about your city that you've always wondered about.
• Keep a summer journal/travel journal. Paste photos along side the entries. Read them at the end of your day. Did you try something new today? Something fun?
Whatever you do, let it be new and fun. Eat Ice cream. Frolic. Be Merry. Enjoy!
