Mover guys. Make room for the ladies. Social activist Gloria Steinem, along with Jane Fonda and a group of influential women, have launched GreeneStone Media - the first radio network for women, run by women. Steinem cites the lack of warm, intelligent, and interesting talk aimed at women and too much of the hostile, male-domination that talk radio has become as reasons for the new network whose slogan is:
Talk. Listen. Connect.
The Network, which debuted this past July wants to bring back laughter and a sense of community to the airways. In her keynote speech, "Broadcasting: As If Women Mattered", announcing the launch, Steinem said that a network owned and controlled by a diverse group of women is long overdue. She said that although statistics show that women should be the majority of radio listeners because they spend a lot more time at home and in activities such as commuting in the car and jogging, the number of women listeners have declined because the decison makers at the helm can't identity or share experiences with the people they are programming for. Unlike the top 40 magazines for women with women editors and televison and cable shows targeted to women programmed by women, radio needs to realize what women want and move forward into this brave new world.
"No wonder 91% of women are annoyed at the low level of ads and pitches directed at us," she said.
Broadcasting from studios in Los Angelos and New York, and soon to be on AM and FM dials, right now the line up has best selling author Lisa Birnbach, 3 comedians known as The Radio Ritas, more talk with Mo and Shana in Women Aloud, and sassy talk with former "The Rolonda Show” namesake Rolonda Watts. Greenestone Media wants to fill the gap untapped by current radio with "provoking, emotionally involving, believalbe and trustworhty" programming of interest to women.
In Greenstone Media's survey of over 1000 women, they said they wanted someone they could trust, a sense of humour and they wanted someone who was open to different views and opinion.
"Radio that talks with you. Not at you," Steinem said in her speech.
When asked about the subject of talk radio, the women said they wanted stories and more stories about fitness, life, family and work. They wanted less politics because it incited fighting and complained that sports had come to be seen as more of a guy thing. The women wanted a sense of community where they could be informed and at the same time learn about other women and their views on issues relating to women and the world.
Steinem, known for her feminist views, warned women not to let lables keep them away from good radio programming. She stated that good programming is not about lables, but about getting good information, humor and creating an on-air-community- "one that treats everyone with respect."
Steinem is calling this venture "the new golden age of radio" - a return to the time when "Radio told me what was going on in the world, and because many voices were female then, it told me that I could be part of that world."
